I’m a sweet-tooth. I enjoy eating desserts and I wish I could make all those lovely sweet treats I see on Pinterest. But because I try to avoid anything that uses measuring cups and spoons and the oven, I always go for no-bake desserts a.k.a. desserts that you can make without worrying about messing it up. Thankfully, I’ve found another one that’s suuppper easy to make – buckeyes or peanut butter balls.

In the US, it’s called Buckeyes because they resemble the nut of the Ohio buckeye tree. So yes, it’s a popular treat in Ohio and nearby states. Buckeye candy is similar to peanut butter balls, only that the latter is completely covered in chocolate. .. Writing this post makes me crave for it.
I only knew about it when my boss posted a photo of it on Instagram. I thought they looked delicious — the idea of peanut butter dipped in chocolate is just mouth-watering. Not to mention, those are two ingredients that kids absolutely LOVE! I got excited about the idea of making peanut butter balls as a treat for my toddler. The awesome thing is that it requires ingredients that I can easily pick up from the nearest grocery.
Moving on, here’s the recipe from Food Network.
What you need for peanut butter balls:
For my version, I just omitted kosher salt. I had salted butter. I also didn’t have vegetable shortening so I left that out. I didn’t put vanilla extract because I forgot to! Lol. And as you can see, I used a Hershey’s chocolate bar because I couldn’t find chocolate chips in the grocery and I just wanted to make buckeyes pronto! It couldn’t wait.
Make your peanut butter balls!
Take out your baking tray and line it with parchment or wax paper. Combine all ingredients (except chocolate chips and shortening) until peanut butter mixture is kneadable. Scoop out mounds and form them into balls. The size depends on your preference. Refrigerate the balls for about 20 minutes.
Meanwhile, melt those chocolate chips in the microwave. If not, you can use the hot water bath method.
Take out your refrigerated peanut butter balls, stick a toothpick in dip and roll it in the melted chocolate. Since it’s a Buckeye candy you’re making, don’t fully cover it in chocolate…
So how does it taste?
The easiest way to describe it is that it simply tasted like Barnuts or Hany! HAHAHA So now I know how to make it, I don’t have to buy Barnuts or Hany in the supermarket! Yay!
So if you’re craving for the old-school Hany’s or Barnuts, make them instead! 🙂
